VoiceCon Orlando 2009

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

voiceconorlando2009My VoiceCon Orlando plans are all set. I’m flying in on Monday, just in time for the show’s opening, and leaving just before the show closes on Wednesday. I’m staying at the Gaylord Palms (And the winner for worst hotel name ever goes to… I understand that was the founders name but maybe they should have considered something a little less offensive to my friends Kody and Aaron…) I’m checking in as Mark Spencer (I assume that Digium will put the Asterisk creator up in a pretty swanky suite.) Or better yet John Chambers, after all Cisco has billions in the bank, they’ll probably spring for the CEO’s upgrade… ;) I’m still working out my plan of attack so if you’d like to say hello please drop me a line and I’ll fit you on to my dance card. As I mentioned in my previous post I’m looking to spend time with AdTran, Digium, Jabra, Tripp Lite, and Polycom. I especially want to poke around with Polycom’s VVX 1500 at its official coming out party (which is appropriate given the venue.) Of course you can stay on top of all the action here at the ichromis.com blog site and my twitter feed.

Chromis and ADTRAN sign partnership agreement

Monday, February 16th, 2009

We’re very selective at Chromis Technology about whose products we’ve chosen to represent and in turn sell to our customer base. Digium, that’s a no brainer, they’re THE Asterisk company. Polycom, everyone knows they make the best handsets out there. Jabra… I think you get my point… Well, we’ve added another spoke to our VoIP wheel. I’d like to formally announce that we’ve signed an agreement to become an ADvantage partner with ADTRAN.

adtran_logo_pms315So why ADTRAN? Well for starters they are one of the world’s most successful network access equipment suppliers, with a long history of profitability and a portfolio of more than 1,300 solutions for use in the last mile of today’s telecommunications networks. Widely deployed by carriers and enterprises, their solutions enable voice, data, video, and Internet communications across copper, fiber, and wireless network infrastructures. So what that means is companies like Qwest, AT&T, Verizon, (i.e. the “Baby Bells”) are using their equipment to deploy their networks. I’m reminded of the Sony HDTV marketing with Peyton Manning during the last NFL season: “The games are shot on Sony HD cameras so shouldn’t you be watching on a Sony HDTV?” Similar concept but much more of a technologically relevant scenario, i.e. less marketing spin in this case. If Qwest is using Adtran gear at the top levels, the ability to “talk” to that network at the SMB level from the Qwest level is more easily achieved. (Please don’t misinterpret that last statement, there is other fabulous gear out there that will connect to the Qwest networks of the world, at various price points, all speaking the same “similar” language. My point is that the gear you choose can make or break your “customer experience”.)

Partnering with ADTRAN creates a relationship that will allow Chromis to offer a complete telecom and networking equipment line from one of the world’s most successful telecom and networking equipment suppliers. The product lineup includes everything an SMB customer needs, including switches, routers, unique integrated switch-routers, and VPN/firewall appliances, all typically list priced at 50 percent less than leading brand name products. (OK I’m just going to say it, Cisco. There I said it.) The ADTRAN solution brings numerous benefits including lower equipment costs, lower total cost of ownership, and better return on investment. Again, a no brainer! A robust line card with high quality solutions for less money. Give us a call at 602-357-8070 or email sales @ chromisinc.com for your personal ADTRAN quote today!

IT Expo Wrap-up – Day 2

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

After a lack of time and an annoyance with my iPhone and the Wordpress application, I decided to just give a general wrap up of yesterday’s events…

I was able to catch the tail end of the Service Provider Roundtable moderated by Andy Abramson. Companies participating in the discussion were Packet8, Broadvox, Telefonica, TW Telecom, and MagicJack.

So my first real session of the day was the keynote session with John Frederiksen General Manager of Microsoft’s Response Point, and Digium CEO, Danny Windham. The hourlong keynote was split into two half hour speeches about each company’s take on the current VoIP market. While John was interesting to listen to and made some fascinating points, I was more interested in hearing what Danny had to say about the current state of Asterisk.

Then the show floor opened and I waded through the over 150 exhibitors. One of the standouts was Snom (who Switchvox has now added to their Auto provisioning feature in their 4.0 release.) The Snom Snow edition phones are definitely different and caught my eye. I was able to get my hands on a Snom 820 so expect a review in the near future.

I had a firsthand demo from Cashton Coleman from IonLogix. He showed me the inner workings of their Phone Manager 2008 platform. His blog is a great read and I think he has a fascinating take on the Asterisk world.

I also took a look at the AdTran TA900 gateway’s. They can be used to provide SIP trunks to legacy PBX systems. The system will convert SIP to PRI that the legacy system can speak hence “VoIPifying” the legacy system…

AdTran's TA900 series gateway.

I bumped into Mitchel Constantin (who you may remember as the developer of “Snap A Number” which Digium bought from him last year) while at the Switchvox 4.0 overview given by Switchvox’s Tristan Deganhardt. Mitchel’s new company, Weavver, is doing some interesting things in the Asterisk space. Stay tuned for news and products that Weavver is now currently developing and testing. I can’t talk about it publicly, but he is on to something…

Shortly before the show closed I attended a “Bullseye routing” demo given by Interactive Intelligence. Now what caught my eye here is the award in the picture. “Best SMB Solution” was what it read… SMB Solution? There is nothing SMB about Interactive Intelligence and their solution. They don’t pretend to be SMB and will always claim to be an enterprise solution. I asked one of the InIn folks and she wasn’t sure what that was all about but would look into it. I even approached TMC’s Greg Galitzine about it and he told me he’d look into it. Greg I’m going to hold you to that and expect a response… :)

Interactive Intelligence

So that was Day 2. I’m heading over for Day 3 and hitting the airport this afternoon. Hopefully I win that Jeep they’re giving away.

Chromis How To:
Polycom EHS with Jabra Headsets

Friday, January 9th, 2009

There is always a lot of confusion as to how to add an Electronic Hook Switch (EHS) Cable to Polycom phones and Jabra Headsets. Anytime someone has ordered one from Chromis, we receive a call on how to make it work. The instructions that come with the cable are a little vague, so here’s how to do it… Step by step…

The following Polycom Soundpoint IP telephones have been tested and support Electronic Hook Switch: 320/330 (Both of these phones require a 2.5mm to RJ-9 adapter), 430, 450, 550, 560, 650 and 670 desktop phones. Check the Jabra-Polycom compatibility matrix to make sure your phone and headset are compatible with each other.

NOTE: This information applies to SoundPoint IP phones running SIP software version 3.0 or later. To check which version you are running please use the following steps:

1. Press “Menu”.
2. Select: Status > Platform > Application > Main – Version will appear on the screen: It needs to be 3.0.X.XXXX or greater. If you are not running SIP version 3.0 or greater the EHS adapter will not work. See your PBX administrator for a firmware upgrade.

Now that we’ve figured out that we’re compatible let’s connect your Polycom phone and Jabra headset with the EHS adapter, just follow these simple steps:

1. On the back on the phone, plug the pin end of the headset adapter into the serial port on your Polycom phone. Make sure to align the pins correctly. They can be tricky. I’ve spent several minutes diagnosing a problem only to find out that the pins were misaligned when the user attached the cable to the phone. See Figure 1 below.

2. Plug the other end of the EHS cable into the AUX port on the headset base station. See Figure 2 below.

3. On the headset base station, program the headset into “DHSG mode”. The headset base station will reboot. (Every headset is different. See your headset owners manual for more information on how to change your headset to DHSG.)

You’re not done yet… Just a few more steps. Now we need to get the software to recognize the EHS adapter on the Polycom phone:
1. Press “Menu”.
2. Select: Settings > Basic > Preferences > Headset > Analog Headset
3. Use the up and down arrows to highlight “Jabra DHSG”. Then press the Select soft key to activate Jabra DHSG on your Polycom phone. See Figure 3 below.

4. Press “Menu” or the Back soft key repeatedly to return to the idle display.

That’s it, now you can start Placing, Answering and Ending Calls using your headset:

  • Press the hookswitch control on the headset to answer or end calls. However, you may not be able to put calls on hold or switch between lines or call appearances with the headset.
  • Lift the handset off-hook or press the headset button on the telephone to switch to the handset during a call or while the phone is ringing. Press the headset button on the telephone to switch to the headset during a call or while the phone is ringing.
  • Press speaker button to switch to the speakerphone during a call or while the phone is ringing. Press the hook switch control on the headset to switch to the headset during a call or while the phone is ringing.
