Voice Over the Grand Canyon: A Switchvox Case Study

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Grand Canyon Resort Corp (GCR) is the company that oversees Grand Canyon West. Grand Canyon West comprises the Western part of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and is contained within the Hualapai Nation. GCR chose Chromis Technology to install Digium’s Turnkey Asterisk PBX, Switchvox SMB, to create a VoIP solution to connect to remote locations that do not have traditional telephone facilities.

Grand Canyon West is an amazing canyon land that is very close to Laughlin, NV; Kingman, AZ; and Flagstaff, AZ. It is also a reasonably short drive from Las Vegas, NV; Sedona, AZ; and Phoenix, AZ. GCR has multiple attractions in Grand Canyon West including the increasingly famous Skywalk that takes you 70 feet from the rim of the Canyon and suspends you 4,000 feet above the Canyon floor! GCR has one Digium AA350 server at their headquarters in Peach Springs, AZ and three AA60 servers at three remote locations. The AA350 has a TE122 card that connects to a local PRI circuit. A satellite connection to each of the remote locations connects each site back to headquarters via IAX trunks and provides a connection to the public telephone network. The G.729 compression codec is used for calls between the servers and G.722 (HD Voice) and G.711 is used for calls internal to each server. In addition to the Digium Switchvox servers, GCR chose Polycom SoundPoint IP telephones.

A big challenge for GCR was connecting those remote facilities. A recently installed a satellite data network from HughesNet is serving up data and voice services to the remote locations. As is common with Satellite data links, excessive latency can wreak havoc on VoIP and make it difficult to have a normal, duplex conversation. GCR appreciates this fact and primarily focuses on providing telephone service to the edge of the Grand Canyon where there is no terrestrial connection to the rest of the world.

Indeed, latency proved to be high, but was often as low as 600ms. Unfortunately the latency results still cause over-talking (when one caller talks before the other caller is finished). The greater problem with the satellite link is jitter, or variation in the delay. During one test the latency varied from 600ms to 1100ms. GCR installed accelerators from Expand Networks to improve the performance over the satellite links.

The latency and jitter fall just outside the range of acceptable, and the delivery of calls is certainly not what we’re used to back in civilization, but by using Digium’s VoIP technology, calls are now being made in and out of Grand Canyon West like they never have before. Switchvox SMB 4.0 upgrade now available

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

SMB 4.0 Coming 03/31/09Digium quietly released the new Switchvox SMB Edition 4.0 yesterday. It features Fax integration, H.263 and H.264 Video support, Instant messaging, Call queue improvements, better auto provisioning which includes support for snom telephones, and G.722 HD Voice support, just to name a few of the enhanced features. Something I never noticed until I looked at the release notes this morning was that they’ve added 6-digit extensions – Extensions can now be 3, 4, 5, or 6 digits. Current support customers can go to Machine Admin: Updates to upgrade their Switchvox SMB to release number 17053.

Catching up on VoIP News

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Well it’s been a crazy couple of weeks since I returned home from my vacation, and the entire Chromis team has been incredibly busy with customers, including me. So I haven’t had much time to express myself by way of blogging. I’ve tried to keep up with my twitter feed but that’s not as easy as I thought it would be. So I’m going to fit everything that’s been on my mind into one long post…. (Sorry!)

Switchvox SMB 4.0 Coming 03/31/09

During the month of March Chromis Technology was awarded “Select” reseller status by Digium. It feels great to be acknowledged by their team for all the hard work we’ve put into providing our customers with rock solid Asterisk based telephony solutions. Stay tuned for more details on that news. Speaking of Digium, we are beta testing the Switchvox SMB 4.0 release on our AA60 demo server and all I can say is wow! This is going to be hit with customers. The beta test is going well, I can’t get into specifics yet, but we did find a few minor things that the Switchvox development team was able to quickly fix in time for the scheduled 03/31/09 release. We’re bringing it to a customer’s site for some after hours T1 testing this evening. So a huge thank you to Digium for allowing us to be a part of the beta process.

HDvoice LogoWhile I’m on the subject of the beta test of SMB 4.0, G722 (otherwise known as HD Voice) calls with our HD enabled Polycom phones are unbelievable! Click here for audio samples from Polycom of a Standard Voice Call and compare and contrast with that of an HD Voice Call.

skype_logoIn Skype news, the company announced that they intend on entering the SIP trunking game. I can’t say anything that hasn’t been said already: Dan York @ disruptive telephony has a detailed analysis here. Garrett Smith @ VoIP Supply has an interesting take here. Jason Goecke asks the question of what will happen to Skype for Asterisk? But here’s the way I see it… Skype has a very large international footprint. I don’t know a SIP provider out there who could come close to providing the service that Skype can deliver in terms of an connectivity to the world. I don’t think people quite understand the global impact this could have on the industry.

polycomvvx1500Polycom’s VVX 1500 (Click here for the datasheet) was announced earlier this month. It’s being touted as “The first business media phone combining advanced IP telephony, one-touch video, and business applications into a seamless, life-like experience.” The new unit includes an integrated camera and delivers business-grade video calling with a simple touch of the screen. The phone has multiple adjustable elements including camera tilt, base height and screen angle to suit the environment and a user’s preferences for personalized eye-to-eye visual communications. I can’t wait to get my hands on a couple to test the video quality. Scheduled ship dates look to be around the end of March/Early April with an MSRP of $1,099.00. Hopefully we’ll have a Chromis Review for you shortly.

voiceconorlando2009It looks like I might be able to make it to VoiceCon in Orlando next week. I’m still finalizing my plans but things are looking good at this point. I’ve always thought of the show as too much of an enterprise gathering (which there is no doubt that it is) but with the list of exhibiting companies it made sense to go and network with my “normal” crowd of AdTran, Digium, Jabra, Polycom, and maybe meet some new ones as well. I’m particularly interested to see how the solutions of Shoretel and also Fonality’s PBXtra stack up next to Switchvox’s SMB 4.0.

So that’s all for now. I apologize for the long winded post. Until next time – ChromisZach
